How many PNP-AC preceptors are in the NPHub network?

Over 110 active PNP-AC preceptors. This is one of our smaller networks because acute pediatric supply is genuinely constrained nationally — there are fewer children's hospitals than adult hospitals, and pediatric ICU/ED preceptors carry heavy clinical loads. We add new acute-pediatric preceptors every quarter, and our deepest coverage is in metros with freestanding children's hospitals like Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Boston. If your school requires a specific subspecialty, flag it early so your Student Coordinator can scope availability before you submit the formal request.

Where are PNP-AC placements typically available?

Most PNP-AC placements are in major metros with children's hospitals or large pediatric service lines. We have the deepest networks in Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Tampa, Charlotte, Cincinnati, and Boston. Smaller markets occasionally have placements through community hospital pediatric units or pediatric subspecialty practices, but those slots fill quickly. If you're geographically flexible, you'll match faster — students who can travel to a major pediatric metro for a block rotation almost always find a placement within our standard timeline. If your school requires local-only placements, expect a longer match window.

How far in advance should I request a PNP-AC rotation?

Accepted Answer

Submit your request at least 8 weeks before your target start date, and 12 weeks is better. Acute pediatric placements have longer match times than primary care for two reasons: preceptors are fewer in number, and inpatient hospital systems often require additional credentialing paperwork (immunization records, drug screens, hospital-specific orientation modules) that can take 4–6 weeks to clear. Your Student Coordinator handles the paperwork side, but the more lead time you give us, the better your odds of getting your preferred site and shift schedule rather than whatever opens up last-minute.

Can I do PNP-AC rotations in specific pediatric subspecialties?

Yes. We have preceptors in pediatric cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, endocrinology, neurology, and ED. Subspecialty availability varies by metro — for example, pediatric cardiology is most accessible in Houston, Boston, and Philadelphia; pediatric hem/onc is concentrated in major academic centers. Tell your Student Coordinator the specific subspecialty and the rationale (program requirement vs. career interest) so we can target the search accurately. If a subspecialty isn't available in your preferred city, we'll either suggest a comparable alternative or scope a placement in a nearby metro.

What's the typical cost of a PNP-AC rotation?

Accepted Answer

Typical full rotation runs $3,200–$5,500 depending on hours and state. The premium over primary care reflects two things: preceptor compensation rates are higher for hospital-based acute pediatric NPs, and the credentialing overhead per placement is larger. A 200-hour rotation in a mid-cost state typically lands around $3,200–$3,800; a 500-hour acute care block in a high-cost market like Boston or San Francisco can reach $5,000–$5,500. Will I get hands-on procedural experience during a PNP-AC rotation?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though procedural exposure varies by setting. PICU and pediatric ED placements typically offer the most procedural opportunities — IV access, blood draws, LP assist, suturing, splinting, intubation observation, and sometimes line placement under direct supervision. Subspecialty rotations (cardiology, GI, pulm) lean more toward diagnostic procedures specific to that field. Procedural autonomy is ultimately at your preceptor's discretion and follows your school's scope-of-practice guidelines, but most NPHub PNP-AC preceptors are accustomed to letting students do supervised procedures as competence builds.
